Camuy River Caverns - Puerto Rico

Cavernas del Rio de Camuy

Camuy is made up of huge underground caverns. At certain points you can look down into deep crevices and see a huge underground River called the River Camuy. It's one of the only underground rivers in the world.

apparently a tourist was killed by a falling Stalagtite in 2008 - thus the lovely green hardhats, although after hearing that i was quite willing to wear it!

the photos can't even come close to capturing the hugeness of these underground caves! i wish i had my tri-pod!

Stalagtites hanging from the ceiling - they are built from minerals and water which drip and form these upside down peaks over hundreds of years.
